چکیده

Higher plants are ubiquitously colonized with fungal endophytes that often lack readily detectable structures. This study examines the diverse endophyte population within a single line of micropropagated Bouteloua eriopoda (Torr.) Torr., using microscopy and comparison of internal spacer (ITS) gene sequences obtained from both plant and isolated fungal tissues. Microscopy revealed fungal hyphae and lipid bodies, the majority of which lacked distinguishing characters. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences amplified from fungal isolates and micropropagated plant tissues were subjected to Bayesian analysis, which clearly distinguished six endophyte taxa. Results confirm a diverse, cryptic endophyte consortium is retained within this micropropagated plant line. The probability of similar complexity in other plant species is discussed. The development of controlled systems in which to study single plant-fungal interactions within such consortia presents significant technical challenges. However, potential for such systems to reveal species interactions that influence plant growth and development is high. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Shrub Invasion Decreases Diversity and Alters Community Stability in Northern Chihuahuan Desert Plant Communities

BACKGROUND Global climate change is rapidly altering species range distributions and interactions within communities. As ranges expand, invading species change interactions in communities which may reduce stability, a mechanism known to affect biodiversity. In aridland ecosystems worldwide, the range of native shrubs is expanding as they invade and replace native grassland vegetation with signi...

Prescribed burning to affect a state transition in a shrub-encroached desert grassland

Prescribed burning is a commonly advocated and historical practice for control of woody species encroachment into grasslands on all continents. However, desert grasslands of the southwestern United States often lack needed herbaceous fuel loads for effective prescriptions, dominant perennial graminoids may have poor fire tolerance, and some systems contain fire-tolerant invasive species. We exa...

Atmospheric nitrogen deposition in the northern Chihuahuan desert: Temporal trends and potential consequences

Rates and impacts of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition are poorly understood in arid land ecosystems where soils are typically low in plant available N. To address this issue, we quantified long-term trends in N deposition and estimated its impact on plant community structure in the northern Chihuahuan desert of Central New Mexico, USA. Annual and seasonal rates of N deposition were strongly ...

Spatial Variation in Remnant Grasses After a Grassland-to-Shrubland State Change: Implications for Restoration

Around the world rangelands that have been degraded, such as historical desert grasslands now dominated by woody shrubs, are resistant to restoration efforts. The goal of this descriptive research was to examine the potential for black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda [Torr.] Torr.) recovery by remnant plants in a degraded area as a function of plant location across a landscape. Our objectives were 1)...

Antitumor Activity of Prosopis glandulosa Torr. on Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) Tumor Bearing Mice

The antitumor activity of ethanol extract of Prosopis glandulosa Torr. (EPG) was evaluated against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) tumor model in Swiss albino mice on dose dependent manner. The activity was assessed using survival time, average increase in body weight, hematological parameters and solid tumor volume. Oral administration of EPG at the dose of 100, 200 and 400 mg/Kg, significantl...
